Child Assent

A child’s affirmative, age-appropriate agreement to participate; complements parental consent.

Child assent is the child’s informed agreement to participate, distinct from parental consent. For digital surveys, assent screens should use simple language and optional audio (Audio-CASI).

Best practices

  • Use short sentences and concrete examples.
  • Provide a clear choice to say “no.”
